How to live in an apartment without a dryer

Start a load of laundry everyday, as part of your morning routine.

The reason you want to do a load of laundry everyday is so that you don’t have as much to wash. This decreases the amount of clothes you need to hang dry and also decreases the chances of running into having nothing to wear but wet clothes! Do this in the morning before you go to work or start your day so in the evening you can come home to dry clothes.

Find a place to hang your clothes

You can do a lot of research on this topic. There are a lot of devices you can use to dry your clothes without a dryer. From retractable clotheslines, fordable clotheslines, to fans. I suggest a Clothesline rope that you just find somewhere to hang in your apartment/house. Just find a place to hang it high and out of the way. Be creative, you’d be surprised at the ways you can hang a clothesline. If you find random places to tie off your clothesline just be careful how heavy you make the rope with the clothes you put on it, and make sure it won’t cause any damage! I also use coat hangers on the clothesline to increase the amount of clothes I can dry at a time.

Put away clothes and repeat

Fold and put your clothes away at the end of the day, or the next morning, so you can start a new load of laundry.

What if I get “Crunchy Clothes”

This isn’t really something that bothers me. Usually the crunchy feeling goes away after wearing it or shaking it out a bit. If it does bother you though try a fabric softener. You can also use vinegar as a softener but I’ve read that vinegar can damage washer hoses so I avoid using it. I have also often wondered if using a clothing steamer would take the “crunch” out of clothes as well. Someone should try that and let me know in the comments how it works! (since I don’t have a clothing steamer at home yet.)

What about blankets?

For bed sheets I plan a day once a week and hang them up, not much different from normal clothes. For big blankets I just go to the laundromat and use the dryer. Since I use a flat sheet underneath my big blankets, I feel comfortable with washing them less frequently.

There are many good reasons not to use a dryer but the biggest reason is cost savings! Dryers are really expensive to run and wear out your clothes a lot faster. If you can build an effective system, air drying clothes really isn’t that much more difficult and the benefits of air drying really add up!
